Hi Misae, thanks for your comment to add to the list. You’re right, getting the mapping right is huge and not always given the priority it should or tested properly.

We had a post on this:

The only thing I felt missing is 301s. So many sites get redesigned but leave a trail of old links in Google and elsewhere. Someone needs the unsexy job of mapping all those out and being digital usher to send visitors to the new content.

I guess this also ties in with strategy as sometimes you might think ‘We’re going to drop this that and the other service/product’. What does that do for your UX? How do you deal with customers who still think you do it? An out of date page is misleading, a 404 error makes you out to be incompetent but a well lead redirect to content explaining what has happened can be a really useful way of helping customers understand a brand’s changes and it’s story as it grows into a new chapter.

Yes, I liked this one Sarah – in the sense that many user journeys don’t start on the home page – so messaging and forward paths from these pages is important too, but often forgotten.

It rings true to me from many projects in the past where it has been hard to get attention for user journeys or thinking about triggers to visit the site, yet 100% interest in the homepage.

Thanks for your comment Albie!

Yes I’ve heard/seen this one many times and even the owners and deadlines don’t help so much.

Point 4 is really important and from experience getting hold of the real content in good time can be difficult, especially in larger organisations when there are multiple departments (legal, marketing, PR etc) to hurdle. Assign owners and deadlines to everything or they’ll wrongly assume they can quickly knock it together at the last minute.
