I’m familiar with the strategy but enjoyed your examples. I’m curious if it’s ever come up: how would a business like mine, one that provides digital marketing and consulting services, develop a blue ocean strategy?

We’re in a highly competitive, highly commoditized industry where it is excruciatingly difficult to stand out. Granted, I have an excellent retention rate because of the well round service I provide and my extensive knowledge base. However, communicating that to prospects is a challenge.

Yep – Naked Wines another fine example, thanks Elena 🙂

Hey Brendan – you can read all about it here 🙂 http://www.blueoceanstrategy.com/ – lots of really good information and examples of organisations. I’ve yet to see it defined for digital and it does have a place, I am looking forward to seeing this become a more established framework

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the feedback

Perhaps I didn’t make the post clear – Starbucks was not necessarily an example of a digital organisation, the company was used as an example of how Blue ocean could be used.

I disagree with your points on Threadless though, by embracing crowdsourcing, that in itself is a value innovation that sits well within the strategy canvass.

I’ve yet to see other posts embracing Blue Ocean with digital marketing so I’m hopeful this post will set a trend and more digital marketers will see the opportunity Blue Ocean offers

Regards,
Simon

Certainly not Starbucks, and Threadless is mostly about crowdsourcing but then there is nothing in the Threadless strategy canvas illustrated that shows a value innovating/ ERRC (eliminate, reduce, raise, create) method to their strategy. Do businesses need to tackle digital marketing? Yes. Can Blue Ocean Strategy be a method for exploring that? Yes. Does this article explain how? I….. dont think so?!? But thanks for putting in the effort – maybe pick some better examples.

I agree with you Brendan. Maybe Naked Wines can be used as an example here.

The Starbucks example doesn’t even mention how the company utilized digital marketing to gain a stronger following, and you’re vague with your description of Threadless’ community.

I’m not familiar with blue ocean strategy on a deeper level, so it may offer new organizational insight, but to me this sounds like a repackaging of disruptive innovation. Can you give us some examples of how this differs from that concept?

I think you shouldn’t use Brand aspiration as key factor as it is more a consequence. I would use in store experience while drinking (your day out) or something like that which is driving aspiration.
Cheers
Laurent
